SUPERINTENDENTS ACADEMY

Leadership Courses 

Course Dates: March 24th — Construction Planning & Scheduling, March 31st — Crew Leadership, April 7th — Construction Productivity, April 14th — Project Cost Control, April 21st — Project Close Out

Location: ABC Central Texas Facility - 2600 Longhorn Blvd, STE 105, Austin, Texas 78758 


This academy is designed for superintendents or personnel undergoing development to assume superintendent positions. It will equip attendees with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in supervisory roles within the construction industry. Attendees will meet one afternoon a week for five weeks to participate in the following courses: Construction Planning & Scheduling, Crew Leadership, Construction Productivity, Project Cost Control, and Project Closeout. All courses are taught by local, experienced industry professionals. ABC Members may register for the entire academy, or register for individual courses.

Course Descriptions 

CONSTRUCTION PLANNING & SCHEDULING | MAR 24TH | 3 - 6 PM | 

Instructors: Ray McCoy, Dan McClure, Doug Allen, Pablo Diaz, and Ryan McGuire with Structure Tone Southwest

Through examining practical construction considerations, this course emphasizes critical path planning and scheduling methods. Students will analyze common industry practices for planning multiple construction activities for commercial projects. The course will provide insight on how this element plays a significant role in the project’s overall duration and bottom line. 

Topics to Include: • Developing and communicating construction schedules • Basic definitions & language of scheduling • Identifying the critical path • Diagram scheduling • Schedule maintenance and monitoring • The construction schedule as a part of the contract doc’s 


CREW LEADERSHIP | MAR 31ST | 3 - 6 PM 

Instructor: Dalton Wallace with ChalkLine Construction

This course focuses on the core concepts of effective leadership and motivation to successfully lead construction teams. In a highly complex and fast paced industry such as construction, effective leadership is imperative for construction management role. Participants will learn key strategies to employ each day to exhibit the highest level of leadership for multiple construction crews or subcontractors. 


CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTIVITY | APR 7TH | 3 - 6 PM 

Instructor: Jake Lisko with Turner Construction Company

Ending a project that is completed on time, within budget and profitable is the ultimate goal for any construction manager or supervisor. Often times, the project’s financial success hinges on a manager’s ability to fully understand how productivity on site effects the over-all bottom line. This course will examine the concepts and techniques used by successful managers to ensure productivity is maintained at a high level through-out the project’s duration. This class will be taught by a dynamic construction professional with years of experience leading construction crews large and small. We will identify factors that commonly lead to low productivity and provide proven techniques to avoid these conditions from developing. Whether you’re a General Contractor managing multiple subcontractor crews or a specialty subcontractor managing a specific crew, learning key techniques to keep your workforce performing at its highest level is imperative for continued success. 

Topics to Include: • Developing and communicating construction schedules • Basic definitions & language of scheduling • Identifying the critical path • Diagram scheduling • Schedule maintenance and monitoring • The construction schedule as a part of the contract doc’s Topics to Include: • Communicating effectively • Maintain a team’s sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm • Properly deal with difficult individuals • Helping others perform at a high level • Leading effective meetings 


PROJECT COST CONTROL | APR 14TH | 3 - 6 PM 

Instructor: Cody Frank with Way Mechanical

• Gain familiarity with the content of construction estimates. • Understand the importance of the estimating & take-off process and the role it plays in managing project cost. • Learn how to translate estimating information into a comprehensive construction budget • Analyze how proper subcontractor evaluation and qualification increases the probability of successful project cost management • Identify common reasons cost-over runs occur and what measures can be taken to prevent them • Learn how to manage Risk & Loss Potential • Discover techniques to properly manage multiple subcontractors and/or labor crews to control cost • Become aware of various factors that may affect the project’s bottom line that may not be anticipated during the estimating process • Learn how to use cost control data in change order pricing and negotiations 


PROJECT CLOSE OUT | APR 21ST | 3 - 5 PM 

Instructor: Jeff Orts with TDIndustries

Learn proven methods to implement an Effective and Successful project closeout. Project close-out is the last phase in the construction process, but arguably one of the most important. Closing out projects has become a real challenge for many contractors. However, it remains a critical aspect of the construction process to ensure on-time and proper payment. Retainer payment often hinges on successful closeout – which generally amounts to most, if not all of the job’s profit. This class will explore effective ways to create and implement a logical process that will promote a complete close out. 

Topics to Include: • Understanding project closeout – start to finish • Maximizing profit by implementing proper close-out procedures • Forecasting & early warnings • Limiting exposure to claims and reputation damage • Punchlists
